Composites Portal continues the interviews with the key men of the composites industry to find out what the future holds for this sector which has always been synonymous with innovation. Today we met Giulio Trevisan, an entrepreneur with a long experience behind him. Here's what he said.
Mr. Trevisan, composite materials are expected to grow in the global market. What do you think about it?
«Composite materials market has experienced significant growth since 2010, and all market forecasts predict continued growth until at least 2027. However, we are noticing a new mix of products and processes needed to meet new customer demands. There are sectors that did not use our materials in the past and that are entering the market with a lot of interest» .
In which sectors, in your opinion, will composites find new applications?
«For sure the energy industry, with all its activities, will become central to the technological development of composite materials. This sector cuts across several areas of the economy, so whether in mobility (cars, trains), energy production (wind power, electric motors) or storage (batteries, hydrogen) we will have great innovations».
What are the limits of biocomposites compared to traditional composites?
«Despite great efforts, biocomposites remain confined to fewer applications. Today, the limitations of their mechanical qualities have not yet been overcome. However, we must insist in the research because their advantages, in the case of recycling and recovery, are undoubtedly a key environmental factor».
In terms of recycling composites, what more could be done?
«The increased use of thermoplastics will help make composite materials more acceptable from an environmental point of view».
Lightness, resistance and... what is the (secret) value of composite materials?
«In my opinion, their durability is also a key factor to consider».
WHO IS
For more than 30 years, Giulio Trevisan has been the CEO of Comec Innovative Srl, a company that currently manufactures special machinery for composite applications. The company was originally founded in 1965 by his father Giuseppe in order to produce parallel lathes for industries and technical schools. He holds a degree in economics and took the lead of the company in 1990. In the early years of his career, he reached a relevant position in Confindustria.
His entrepreneurial approach led the company to take on new application fields over the years, in connection with changing markets. The development of today's activities began in 2007 thanks to the company's historical partnerships with the aerospace industry. Since 2012 Comec Innovative has started to focus on the production of high-quality machinery for the GFRP and CFRP industry, designing and manufacturing a new generation of advanced machinery tailored for customers in Italy and worldwide. In addition, considering the growth of the hydrogen sector in recent years, the company is dedicating itself to this market to provide machinery able to manufacture hydrogen pressure tanks for mobility.
