“In Abruzzo, the aerospace sector is one of the leading industries in both the scientific and industrial landscape, reaffirming the region’s strong commitment to technological innovation. The production chain is of utmost significance due to the presence of extensive know-how, technical expertise, high-level manufacturing, and the presence of three major companies that are global leaders in the aerospace industry.”
These were the words of President Marco Marsilio, who recently spoke in L'Aquila, at the Hypogeum Hall of the Abruzzo Regional Council, during the first meeting dedicated to the establishment of the Abruzzo Aerospace District. The initiative, promoted by the Abruzzo Region, saw the participation of representatives from major aerospace companies, SMEs, research centers, and universities, demonstrating the strong commitment to strengthening the regional technological and industrial ecosystem.
The founding entities of the District will be three centers of excellence: Leonardo, Thales Alenia Space Italia, and Telespazio. Thus begins the journey of the Abruzzo Region and the Aerospace District (DAAB), which will culminate in the drafting and signing of the official act and regulations.
During the event, Marsilio highlighted the strategic importance of the project for the region’s economic and industrial fabric. “The creation of the Abruzzo Aerospace District represents an extraordinary opportunity to position our region at the forefront of technological innovation,” he added. “We aim to enhance the competitiveness of our companies, promote highly skilled employment, and make a significant contribution to the development of the entire Italian and European aerospace sector. Abruzzo has all the necessary assets to become a center of excellence in this field.”
The District will serve as a key interlocutor with local and national institutions, coordinate supply chain projects, identify funding opportunities, and address the growing demand for specialized training in an industry that increasingly requires advanced skills.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity,” commented the Regional Minister for Productive Activities, Tiziana Magnacca, “to improve the competitiveness of our businesses, explore new technological frontiers, and develop innovative business models. The goal is to transfer scientific and technological research into practical applications, optimizing the coordination of space-related economies. This initiative also aims to involve companies from traditional sectors, such as the automotive industry, integrating them into the transition toward aerospace, in alignment with national government efforts and the opportunities provided by European legislation. Abruzzo is ready to embrace this ambitious challenge and position itself as a key player in the industrial and technological landscape of the future. The new key priorities must be advanced training, fostering a space-oriented culture, and the creation of new businesses, such as startups and spin-offs.”
